The Big Red Monster Kicks Off ECW Homecoming: 12/15/09

The night started off with GM Tiffany in the ring being very proud of her brands contribution to the TLC PPV.  So excited in fact, that she had Shelton Benjamin and ECW Champion Christian come out to the ring to personally thank them both.  Both superstars hobbled to the ring as the should as their  match was pretty pains-taking. Benjamin said that he was very proud to have been in the match but was a little disappointed in himself for not reaching his Gold Standard goal and wanted to do it again requesting a rematch.  Right on cue, William Regal interrupts Tiffany’s important announcement regarding that potential rematch with one word…Poppycock!

Seriously, that’s what he called it then questioned the GM’s sanity as to why she’d bring back the Big Red Monster Kane to ECW.  She explained:  Leading to the Royal Rumble, ECW will be having a Homecoming Tournament for the #1 Contender’s spot featuring past ECW Champions competing against current ECW superstars over the next few weeks.  This weeks qualifier matches were Vladimir Kozlov vs. Ezekiel Jackson and Kane vs. Zack Ryder.  Poor Zack Ryder. Christian and Benjamin have a well deserved night off.

“The Ripper” Paul Burchill vs. The Hurricane

The Hurricane’s arch-nemesis Paul Burchill and sister Katie Lea was banished from ECW weeks ago but shortly after a menacing masked figure known as The Ripper emerged attacking ECW’s Emerald Knight.  Later shown requesting to be part of the New Superstar Initiative with villainous sidekick Beautiful Nightmare gets his opportunity if he can pull off the win against The Hurricane.  Ok, we all know it’s Paul and Katie Lea but it makes for compelling entertainment.  Unfortunately for the devilish duo they are still unable to defeat their heroic nemesis as The Hurricane unmasks The Ripper revealing Paul Burchill, hits him with The Shining Wizard and pins him for the win sending the two away yet again.

The match was great, very dramatic with a good climactic finish.  The only part I didn’t like was the post match response Paul gave when interviewed backstage by Gregory Helms.  He just yelled after looking solemn.  I know he’s supposed to be angry and frustrated but this is an entertaining feud. Besides every hero needs an arch-villain.  Hopefully they continue this one a little bit longer.

ECW Homecoming Qualifying Match

Vladimir Kozlov vs. Ezekiel Jackson

Finally! After months of teasing, these to monsters square off and no one left disappointed. Confused maybe, but definitely not disappointed. You see, the two were pummeling one another back and forth with Kozlov seemingly taking the upper hand with William Regal at ringside for support…or was he? As Kozlov was going for what I can assume was going to be a running headbutt, Regal grabs his leg tripping him up allowing Jackson to win the match after his devastating Uranage slam.  Considering Jackson was the fan-favorite of the two and Regal is a heavy heel, I got nothing but I am interested to see this play out.  Also Regal forgot his jacket, was confronted by Kozlov who was attacked by Jackson who with the help of Regal threw Kozlov into the announce table.

Trent Barreta & Caylen Croft vs. Local Competitors

After warming up with a win against DX these two went out to the ring to face two local competitors.  (Note: Their DX victory was in Smackdown Vs. Raw 2010 video game)  The two brash young superstars made quick work of their opponents, singling out one person the entire match and finishing with the debut of a new tag finisher, a Neckbreaker Powerbomb.  Afterward taking the mic away from the nights ring announcer Savannah claiming to be 2010 Slammy Award Winning Tag Team of the Year. I wish them all the best as it will be tough with DX as Tag Champs and The Hart Dynasty performing like they are currently.

The Abraham Washington Show with Special Guest: Maria

Maria and Tony made fun of Abe after he tried to make fun of her for getting Kanye’d by Batista. That’s pretty much it.  Oh yeah, she was the guest because she’s the new Diva of the Year.

ECW Homcoming Qualifying Match

Kane vs. Zack Ryder

Ryder may be lucky enough to have Rosa Mendes on his arm but the Long Island native certainly hasn’t been having much in-ring luck as he had to face “The Big Red Monster” Kane in order to advance in the Homecoming Tournament.  Though he put up a great effort, Ryder suffered a Chokeslam as Kane picked up the win.

This weeks Superstar of the Week goes to guest competitor Kane winning the first former champion match in the tournament and for calling Goldust and Yoshi Tatsu freaks. Good job Kane.

The ECW Homecoming Tournament

I’m gonna explain this concept a little more in-depth. It’s 16 superstar in 8 matches where former ECW Champions will be thrown into the mix. The winners will be in an 8-Man Over-The-Top-Rope Elimination Finale where the winner will face ECW Champion Christian for the ECW Championship.

Now interesting name choices aside this is actually a pretty good idea. Champion Christian has been a workhorse of a champ and could use some brief downtime plus in past weeks, former ECW Champions CM Punk and Matt Hardy got huge responses upon their return so seeing former champions like Kane can only be good. Next week we get Yoshi Tatsu vs. Jack Swagger. How can that not be amazing match to watch?  So in conclusion, great idea Tiffany.

This week’s ECW seemed to be lacking to me, it seemed like to many matches and segments for one hour. I understand they want to give everyone some time but they should’ve skipped the Dudebuster’s match and trimmed down the interview at the start to give Kane/Ryder more time. Although it was a much better show then RAW was, that had to be the worst RAW ever. The Tatsu/Swagger is going to be amazing next week, and I can’t wait to see it. Great recap, and I agree Burchill/Hurricane was a great match, but would’ve liked it to last longer.
