A Week of Royal Rumblings: The Basics

The Royal Rumble is my favorite event of the year, hands down.  I look forward to it every year.  To celebrate this year, I will be giving random stats and facts about the Rumble all week leading up to my preview of the event on Saturday.  Today’s stats, the basic facts and figures.

The Basics

  • There have been 22 Royal Rumble events.
  • There have been 19 different Royal Rumble winners (Hacksaw Jim Duggan, Big John Studd, Hulk Hogan (twice), Ric Flair, Yokozuna, Bret Hart, Lex Luger, Shawn Michaels (twice), Steve Austin (three times), Vince McMahon, The Rock, Triple H, Brock Lesnar, Chris Benoit, Batista, Rey Mysterio, Undertaker, John Cena, Randy Orton).
  • All but three Rumble winners (Hacksaw Jim Duggan, Big John Studd, Lex Luger) have won a world title after their Rumble win.
  • Since the stipulation was added in 1993, 7 superstars (Lex Luger, Shawn Michaels, Steve Austin, Vince McMahon, The Rock, John Cena, Randy Orton) have not gone on to win a world championship at WrestleMania.
  • That means 10 superstars (Yokozuna, Bret Hart, Shawn Michaels, Steve Austin (twice), Triple H, Brock Lesnar, Chris Benoit, Batista, Rey Mysterio, Undertaker) have gone on to victory at WrestleMania.
  • A babyface has won 16 out of 22 Royal Rumbles. In 1994, both winners were faces.
  • Glenn Jacobs (Issac Yankum, “Diesel”, Kane) has participated in the most Royal Rumbles at 13.  The WWE acknowledges 11 of those as Kane, making him tied with Shawn Michaels for most appearances.
  • Kane has the longest streak of consecutive Royal Rumbles at 11.
  • Santino Marella has the record for quickest elimination at 0:01 in 2009.
  • A-Train (Prince Albert, Albert) has participated in the most Rumbles (5) without eliminating a single superstar.
  • Hulk Hogan has eliminated the most superstars in the fewest amount of Royal Rumble appearances (25 in 4 Rumbles). A close second is Diesel (Kevin Nash) (12 eliminations in 2 Royal Rumble appearances).
  • Chyna is the only female to participate in a Royal Rumble.
  • Steve Austin has the most Royal Rumble wins at 3.
  • Rey Mysterio has the record for longest Royal Rumble performance at 1:02:12, set in 2006.
