Deadman Betrayed: WWE Hell in a Cell 2010

All seemed to be going in the favor of the Undertaker.  His power restored, his portly manager following – he was good to return to the top of the Smackdown roster by defeating Kane for the World Heavyweight championship.  Unfortunately, family matters got in the way.  Shame on you if you forgot that Paul Bearer is actually Kane’s father (Taker and Kane are half brothers).

Kane’s rage drove him to demolish the referee which forced WWE officials to come into the Cell for medical attention.  That allowed Paul Bearer to also enter the ring with the urn, though not with the type of effects one would have suspected.  Bearer opened the urn onto the Undertaker which seemingly weakened him, then handed it to Kane who clonked his brother good with the ashes of his parents.  Chokeslam, three count, and Kane shockingly retained the World Heavyweight Championship…and even got his daddy back too.

On the Raw side of things, the Hell in a Cell enclosed Sheamus and Randy Orton.  There’s not really a whole lot to say about this match other than it was a Hell in a Cell match between Sheamus and Randy Orton.  Sheamus brought the base of the ring steps into the ring, but suffered for it by being slammed on it.  Eventually after trading near-falls, Orton hit Sheamus with the RKO on the steps and that was that.

Rest of the show after the jump.

  • The only match I didn’t see was the United States title match.  I heard John Morrison did a crazy spot, Alex Riley got involved and Daniel Bryan retained his belt by making the Miz tap out to the LaBell Lock.
  • The NXT contestants got some mic time, but were interrupted by the Nexus who showed off their armband saved for John Cena.
  • Alberto Del Rio began his usual schtick, but was interrupted by Edge who informed him that most of the stuff about him was stupid.  Jack Swagger then came out and the three got into a tussle, leading the Raw GM (with a new computer) to make a match between Edge and Jack Swagger.
  • Edge defeated Swagger with a spear in a pretty good match.
  • Backstage, David Otunga told the other Nexus members that he had a plan that wouldn’t involve them interfering in the Barrett/Cena match.
  • Wade Barrett defeated John Cena, making Cena a member of the Nexus.  During the match, the Nexus came out, but a number of WWE Superstars came out to run them off.  As Cena hit the STF, a fan slid into the ring, causing the referee to deal with the distraction.  While that was going on, another “fan” ran by and clocked Cena in the head, giving Barrett the win.
  • Natalya had Michelle McCool locked in the Sharpshooter, but just as she tapped out, Layla chucked her shoe at Natalya, causing a disqualification.  Natalya won the match, but McCool retained the belt.

Looking Back
It’s not that this was a bad show – there was just nothing to it.  No titles changed hands (for a change) and the only thing of consequence that went down was Paul Bearer’s betrayal.  It was exactly what I would have expected out of a PPV that only had two weeks of build from the last one, and three weeks until the next one.  I’m finding myself enjoying Kane’s constant wins over the Undertaker.  I know eventually they will come to an end, but for now, I am still intrigued by the whole mess, goofy as it is.

  • What now for Randy Orton and Sheamus?
  • While you weren’t looking, Edge became a babyface.  How interesting!
  • While I do think that John Cena joining the Nexus is the far more interesting storyline, I think the ending of the match was awful.  Not one fan run-in, but two?  Couldn’t Wade have just beaten him?
  • I don’t think we’ve seen the last of Natalya vs. LayCool.
