Great Moments In Championship History: United States Title II

Eddie Guerrero vs. Chris Benoit (WWE Vengeance 2003)

(part 1)

Setup: In the fall of 2001, U.S. Champion Edge defeated the Intercontinental Champion Test in a winner-take-all match. The U.S. Title was absorbed into the IC Title and remained inactive for over a year and a half. It was revived in mid 2003, when Smackdown GM (at that time) Stephanie McMahon created a tournament to crown the new United States Champion. The finalists met at Vengeance.

(part 2)

(part 3)

Aftermath: Eddie Guerrero would become involved in a feud with John Cena over the title, defeating Cena in a “Latino heat Parking Lot Brawl”. He also won the WWE World Tag team Titles with his nephew, Chavo. Guerrero would hold on to the U.S. Title until No Mercy, when he was defeated by the Big Show (he lost the Tag Titles  4 days later to the Bashams).
