Brodus Clay wins Smash & Grab Challenge

Brodus Clay wins Save Yourself Trivia

Daniel Bryan def. Derrick Bateman

  • The night opened with Derrick Bateman challenging his Pro Daniel Bryan to a submission exhibition with pinfalls legal. Confused, Bryan accepted but needed to change so that people could tell them apart. Cue shot of them in matching “DB” trunks.
  • There must have been a sale on piñatas last weeks. That’s the only explanation I have for the Smash & Grab Challenge.
  • Big Brodus Clay had a big night before next weeks elimination round.
  • It seems the NXT writing staff were fans of Nickelodeon with their You Can’t Do That On TV homage trivia challenge.
  • The Bryan/Bateman match started off a little slow but picked up about halfway through finishing with a series of LeBell Lock attempts and counters.
  • Voting is going on now thru Tuesday so vote now.

This week marked the 11.538 Anniversary of Smackdown or as the WWE is calling it their 600 Episode. There’s no real significance to the number as they’ve been the 3rd longest running weekly episodic program for a while now and in 33 shows will be #2. So the show really is just the first round number since moving to Syfy so it’ll boost ratings with a cross-branded opening match featuring 12 of the top superstars in the company. And I’m ok with that.

The night was all about Edge, Dolph Ziggler & the World Heavyweight Championship. After the events that come out of last weeks main event Vickie Guerrero stripped Edge of the title this week and planned a Championship Coronation for her boyfriend Dolph Ziggler. And to assure no problems from the former champion, Edge was promptly fired for using a banned maneuver and for attacking GM Teddy Long (no real proof was ever shown).

During the coronation a special uninvited guest would make an appearance, the fully recovered Teddy Long. After getting the truth about the attack from Vickie he used his GM authority to rehire Edge and schedule a World Heavyweight Championship match right then and there. About 7 minutes later Edge is the new World Heavyweight Champion and Ziggler is fired. Confetti fell from the rafters as Edge led the audience in a “Na, Na, Na, Na, Hey, Hey, Hey, Goodbye” for the 10 minute Champ.

As for the rest of the 600 episode…

  • Rey Mysterio carried his team to victory in his hometown San Diego with Edge picking up the pinfall after an emphatic Spear.
  • Maryse teamed with Layla this week as Michelle McCool was suffering from an injured foot due to Layla’s hard head.
  • Miz beat Kofi Kingston with some help from Alberto Del Rio and I now know what that scarf he’s always got on is for.
  • I, like Booker T, got a good laugh out of Michael Cole’s long-winded praising of The Miz.
  • Corre decimated Santino & Kozlov after their title match until Big Show made the save.
  • Big Show and Ezekiel Jackson had a stare down afterward taunting a throw-down but Corre convinced Big Zeke to save the fight for another day.
  • With Ziggler fired, who’s going to take his spot in this Sunday’s Smackdown Elimination Chamber match?
  • “Dashing” Cody Rhodes gave an interview wearing a face protector announcing his been cleared to travel and will have an announcement next week.
