Raw 2/21/11

On this episode of Raw, the mystery of the 2-21-11 promos would finally revealed.  The tag team titles would be defended, twice.  A challenge for Wrestlemania would be made.  Two Elimination Chamber combatants would face-off, with a third ignoring threats against him.  Match results are below, and full details are after the break.

Match Results
CM Punk def. John Morrison by pinfall
The Bellas def. Eve & Gail Kim by pinfall
Mark Henry def. King Sheamus by pinfall
Tag Team Title match:  The Miz & John Cena def. Justin Gabriel(c) & Heath Slater(c)
Tag Team Title match:  Justin Gabriel & Heath Slater def. John Cena(c) & The Miz(c)

John Cena opening.
Cena came out and talked about how he should be excited about going to Wrestlemania to face The Miz, but all he can think about is what The Rock said last week.  Cena asks if he should respond to The Rock, but he only knows one way how, reminding everyone that he has a degree in Thuganomics.  Cena then went “old school,” free-styling his response to The Rock just like he used to.

CM Punk def. John Morrison by pinfall.
Both competitors limped their way to their ring.  During the match, Punk focused on Morrison’s hurt knee, and eventually hit Morrison with the GTS to get the pinfall.  After the match, Punk called out Randall Keith Orton.  Punk was telling Orton that it wasn’t in his future to compete at Wrestlemania, and he should just walk away from things.  Punk told Orton that if he showed up to Raw next week, he’d hurt him.  Orton ran into the ring and attacked Punk.  Punk rolled out, and Nexus (still minus Husky Harris) came out to protect him.

Kofi Kingston attacks Alberto Del Rio.
Del Rio was making his way to the ring, but was attacked from behind by Kofi.  Kofi had the upper hand until Ricardo Rodriguez hit Kofi from behind.   Del Rio got the best of Kofi, and put Kofi into the Cross Armbreaker.

The Miz speaks to the crowd.
The Miz mocked grown men that were in the audience crying about the return of another man, The Rock.  The Miz then admitted by that he was looking forward to hearing what The Rock had to say, but was disappointed by its lack of creativity.  The Miz then went on a rant about how he doesn’t care what anyone thinks about him.  The GM sent an e-mail making a reference to the Rock ‘n Sock Connection, and then put Miz and Cena in a tag match together for the tag team titles.

The Bellas def. Eve & Gail Kim by pinfall.
While the ref was distracted, the Bellas pulled the ol’ switch-a-roo, and pinned Eve with a small package.

The Undertaker returns.
The 2-21-11 promo had been counting down over the course of the episode.  When it got down to zero, Undertaker came out.  When the Undertaker’s music ends, Triple H music starts.  Neither man said a word.  Triple H stared at Taker, then at the Wrestlemania sign.  Taker smirked at him and shook his head ‘no’.  Taker started to walk away, but turned around and did his throat slashing gesture.  Triple H then did his crotch chop.

Mark Henry def. King Sheamus by pinfall.
Sheamus exposed a turnbuckle, but it backfired when Henry splashed him in the corner.  Henry then hit Sheamus with the World’s Strongest Slam to get the pinfall.

Sheamus backstage.
Daniel Bryan was talking with Gail Kim backstage, when Sheamus walked by and threatened Bryan.

Hall of Fame Inductee.
Hacksaw Jim Duggan was announced as another inductee into the WWE Hall of Fame.

Michael Cole interviews Jerry “The King” Lawler.
Cole asked Lawler a series of antagonizing questions, with the last one focusing on how Lawler felt knowing that his dead mother watched him lose his title shot.  This pissed Lawler off and he grabbed Cole.  Lawler said that even though he failed, he had a way to have a match at Wrestlemania, then shoved Cole.  They went to the outside, and Lawler challenged Cole to a match at Wrestlemania.  Cole threw his drink at Lawler, then ran off.

Tag Team Title match:  The Miz & John Cena def. Justin Gabriel(c) & Heath Slater(c).
Without much conflict, The Miz hit Justin Gabriel with the Skull-Crushing Finale and got the pinfall.  Wade Barrett announced that they wanted to invoke their rematch clause tonight, and the GM approved it.

Tag Team Title match:  Justin Gabriel & Heath Slater def. John Cena(c) & The Miz(c).
As the match progressed, Cena had Slater set up to deliver an Attitude Adjustment when The Miz, behind the ref’s back, hit Cena with the Skull-Crushing Finale.  This allowed Slater to get the pinfall, and reclaim the belts.

Last Word
So, the promos really were for the Undertaker and not Sting.  I’m certain this upsets Internet fans everywhere.  But you know who wasn’t upset by this revelation?  Me.  There was nothing in any of the promos that told me that Sting was coming.  You know who else wasn’t upset that it was the Undertaker?  Most of the fans in attendance, judging by the reaction they gave.  I’m certain that some reports of the show will talk about how disappointed the crowd sounded, but that’s not the case.  The crowd was excited when the Undertaker came out.  They were excited when Triple H came out.  They were excited by the confrontation.  A problem with Internet fandom is that they believe that all fans think like them, or know as much about the behind the scenes dealings as they do, but this is not the case.  Internet fans are a small minority of the overall fanbase, but this is a rant for another day.

  • The wordless exchange between Taker and Triple H was a bit odd, but I also liked it.  I can’t think how either of them saying anything would’ve helped the segment.  It was obvious enough what each one would’ve said.
  • Please don’t let the Mark Henry/King Sheamus feud lead to a singles match at Wrestlemania.
  • The Miz winning the tag titles, then Cena being the one to get pinned to lose them was a nice touch.
  • Like Lawler challenging Cole to a match at Wrestlemania.  Dislike that Cole didn’t cost Lawler the match at Elimination Chamber to lead to this challenge.
  • Alberto Del Rio needs to stay on Smackdown.  There’s no point in having him show up on Raw.
  • I was just thinking that Cena needs to freestyle again.  I missed the days when he did that.
